Intravenous Immune Globulin (IVIG): Changing Lives for Individuals with Autism (and PANS/PANDAS) and Underling Autoimmune Encephalitis
We know that there is immune dysregulation in PANS/PANDAs, but until only recently, many researchers have doubted immune dysregulation in autism. It has been hypothesized that many children with autism indeed have vetting degrees of autoimmune encephalitis. Increasing evidence of autoimmune etiology in individuals with autism has brought to light the presence of significantly altered and inappropriate immune responses in this population. This immune system dysfunction represents a great opportunity for deeper investigation and application of both novel and translational immune-based treatments which hold great promise to greatly improve outcomes for individuals with autism. IVIG and other immune modulators should be included as options for supporting and reversing immune dysregulation in autism. IVIG is used in PANS/PANDAS with good success, and many times, vastly improves or even reverses symptomatology. Translated to autism, early use of IVIG or SQIG and other immunotherapies, along with solid foundational systems-based functional medicine /biomedical root-cause treatments, can offer immense benefit for individuals with autism, including the potential to reverse autism in a subset of children. This talk will cover what IVIG and SQIG are, review related research on Immunoglobulin therapy, discuss experience infusing /administering IVIG to children, and discuss related potential side effects. We will also discuss how to determine if your child might be a good candidate for IVIG, and how to explore different options in regards to obtaining this therapy for your child, if appropriate.
